What is Considered a Dental Emergency?

Any time you have pain that you’d consider unbearable or concerned about your health, we’d consider it an emergency. If you’re unsure whether you need dental care right away, you probably do. Dr. Roarke Miller is available to help and answer questions.

Some common dental emergencies include:

  • Trauma from Injury.

Your teeth can crack, break, even fall out. These situations can be harrowing, and you should seek immediate dental help. If a tooth comes out, we can replace it in some situations. You must seek treatment within an hour or as quickly as possible. You should rinse the tooth in water without scrubbing it. Place it back into the socket. If it doesn’t go back into the socket, keep it in a cup of warm milk to help preserve it. If a piece of your tooth has broken off, save the fragments and bring them to us for treatment.

  • Infection or Advanced Gum Disease such as Periodontal Disease

It’s normal for gums to bleed occasionally and minimally during cleaning and flossing. But if your gums are swollen and bleeding frequently, you may have an infection. Infection can spread throughout your gums, teeth, and other body regions. An infection warrants emergency dental care. Reach out to us as soon as possible if you suspect you have a dental infection. You can rinse your mouth with a mild saltwater solution to relieve pain and improve healing until you receive professional treatment. You can also apply an alternating warm and cold compress to the outside of your cheek and take an anti-inflammatory.

Periodontal disease is a serious gum disease caused by bacteria in the gums. Plaque, tartar, and bacteria buildup cause inflammation of the gums that separate the teeth and gums. If left untreated, gum disease can affect your teeth, gums, and jawbone. The condition can be quite painful, and we should treat it as soon as possible.

  • Bruxism or Teeth Grinding.

Toothache and hypersensitivity can be caused by clenching or grinding your teeth throughout the day or at night.

Some Precautions You Can Take To Avoid Emergencies

If you take some excellent precautions, we can help you avoid losing a tooth or allowing an accident to turn into a more severe problem. Here are a few precautions to help you prevent a dental emergency, including broken, cracked, or displaced tooth:

  • Wear a dental guard when playing sports.
  • Take care when biting into hard candy, sticky foods, popcorn, or ice.
  • Don’t use your teeth for cutting tape and opening packaging.
  • See us for a dental checkup about twice per year.
